Slower Traffic Keep Right

This sign is the most significant independent variable causing some of the most psychotic behavior in our society.  This sign has been construed by low IQ people, uneducated people, neurotic people, and psychotic people to mean that the left lane is the “fast lane”.    The government erected the sign and yet the government cannot comprehend that the sign is one of the antecedent conditions to a lot of  aberrant behavior.  The above drivers become infuriated at the drivers who are traveling the speed limit because they “think” that the “keep right sign” supercedes all other laws.  The only occasion where you can violate any traffic law is when directed to do so by a Law Enforcement Officer.  Highway construction workers can direct traffic - truck drivers and building construction workers cannot direct traffic and they should be arrested when they do so.

The sign also contributes to the congested expressway.   The more the vehicles jam-up on the right side, the more difficult it is for entrance ramp traffic to enter the expressway.

The sign also contributes to drivers holding the traffic laws in contempt.   The above drivers rationalizes that the speed limit law is meaningless because they are in the “fast lane”.   One day I saw a driver in the left lane overtake a State Patrol car that was traveling the speed limit in the second from the left lane.  (The  flashing blue light brought an education to one driver).

The driver in the right lane rationalizes that his traveling over the speed limit  is ok because he is going slower than the driver on his left.  If a driver is allowed to rationalize one traffic law, he will rationalize the others.   Some years ago, I had a student driver to tell me that his mother said the laws requiring a signal before turning do not apply when you are in your neighborhood.

Replace the sign with “Less than Speed Limit, Keep Right”.
Replace the minimum speed sign with “Right Lane, Minimum 40 mph”.

We would move more vehicles if the system required drivers to:
1.  keep left
2.  maintain 2 seconds distance
3.  maintain the posted speed
